This is quite possibly the most fantastic creation of the season. They have a streamlined and chic fit and pull together just about any outfit. Yet they feel like leggings and are comfortable enough to crawl into a giant couch pretzel style and get intense amounts of work done! Leggings with the look of pants! I haven't the slightest idea why it has not been thought of before (leather and liquid pants DO. NOT. COUNT. ) Cardigan? Check. Leotard? Check. Best Pants Ever? Double Check.

No, not the outfit. It's one of my favorites actually. What's weird is how you can have a dress for years and nobody will notice it until the random random day when you wear it out of season. Almost everyone I talked to today complemented this dress even though I had worn it several times before. One of my friends said it was because everyone seems to favor the color gray this winter and thus a bright color really catches their attention. I suppose, but shouldn't bright colors always catch your attention? I'm not complaining, just surprised.

Right about now I am on a Maryland Highway ready to get home and spend the next week or two in my swimsuit and spending every waking moment with friends, family and especially my friend J.J. who will be coming in from Jersey for a program at UArts. I can't wait! Oooh I can just taste the water ice...

Anywho, I put together this little spread of some summer morning staples that go very nicely with my backyard and possibly the inside of a water fountain. The ruffles are...try and guess...so flamenco. Plus the Shay Todd bikini top would make a great halfshirt. I'd wear it with the Hudson Skinny Jeans which have a 27 1/2 inch inseam so they don't awkwardly puddle at your ankles. they would also be paired with flat shoes in a very Hepburn-esque way. I picked a very violet and blue color scheme because it's not too abrasive and reminds me of every soft summer night I spent running out of the woods with my face painted with squashed firefly. This, is a true midsummer night's dream.

Kamila Filipcikova has fantastic style. It's put together on a basic level with two well-respected standbys: the linen shirt, denim short, and large bag. Yet it has intricacies and quirks that add personality, like ruffles, bows, a fedora, and suede boots. I recreated the look here in a more late-summer friendly way with cutout flats which are an adorable summer alternative to sandals.

I adore flowers. My favorite is any kind of Lily. Recently, I have been mourning the discontinuation of my favorite Soap, Lush's Lily Savon. It kept me and my bathroom smelling like lilies all day (it was way fragrant). To me, floral clothing always feels fresh. It keeps me from wilting in the summer heat. Tomorrow is my 17th birthday. Since I'm away I cannot celebrate it with close family and friends. However, I can plan for when I get back! What I would absolutely adore is to have a tea party or garden party. I would wear white to represent the commencement of a new year of my life. It will also be the last year of my youth so I must savor every second of it. Youth is a very powerful, meaningful, and beautiful time in everyone's life. It should be greatly appreciated, always celebrated, and dearly cherished.

Once I leave UVA I'll be spending the rest of the summer visiting schools and taking lots of pictures. So I'll bring a note book and of course my camera. I like this look because it is light and summery but also tasteful for touring campuses. The bag adds practicallity and the shoes are not too out there. The accessories are also quirky but they're minimal and simple.

Carried Away

My school's commencement was on Wednesday. I am now technically a senior. I want to start this off right so I must become organized. This means, I must re-examine my carry-all. I can almost always be seen carrying my huge satin tote (which my friend Greg calls a purse...it's entirely too big to be a purse) everywhere from school-to the mall. On days when I must carry more than usual, I revert to my extra-large sized LL Bean Boat and Tote. Inside both of these magnificent bags is a world of chaos. See, I tend to throw everything inside and then spend a good minute or five trying to fish out what I need. Sometimes things actually get damaged inside the bag when I put them in there to be protected! Thus, change is necessary. Here's how:

It is a little sad how much difference this would make. Perhaps it could keep my ipod from ending up scratched and my pencils from breaking. Plus, it's got roosters on it! One miracle at a time please. Rooster Zippy Pouch-$12

Loop wallets were made for me. Seriously, I'm not old enough to have a credit card without my parents signing on so I pay for everything in cash. Needless to say I accumulate a lot of change. My current wallet is by Loop and it contains an all too convenient change purse to keep coins from spending eternity at the bottom of my bag. Once that wallet dies, I'll by this one. Baggu Bags are quite possibly some of the coolest reusable bags around. They come in practically every color and hold A LOT. They also fold to fit nicely into individual flat 5"x5" pouches. I try to use reusable bags whenever I go shopping for anything but I often forget. These don't take up too much space so I can always have them on hand. Baggu reusable shopping bags-$8 ea. The Office: Summer in the City

As you already know, summer is approaching quickly. For those of you in school this might mean interships and other summer programs are quikly approaching. While everyone else is going off to the country and the beach, you get to slave away in the city, dealing with chilly offices and sweltering concrete. Now, chances are we've all spent at least one summer at home growing up and lounging in the park was fine in cutoffs and flip flops, but this time around the dresscode is a little more grown up. Last time you checked, cutoffs didn't cut it in the board room and opaque tights and an oxford didn't mix with hot train stations. So where does one find common ground?

Gender bending menswear inspired styles are always good when you want to give yourself an edge. It also symbolizes versitility in the ability to tap into a masculine side. The other day I went downtown with some friends for a friends birthday. After tons of shopping we were about to cross the street to go to the train station when I exclaimed "Oh my God I have a compulsive shopping problem" Indeed I do so this summer I will go to retail rehab and stave off trying my hardest to buy stuff. Style Icon: Audrey Hepburn in Paris when it Sizzles

This is just one of the many looks Audrey Hepburn sported in 1964's Paris When it Sizzles. The movie stars the fantastic duo consisting of Hepburn and long time friend William Holden. The film features a movie within a movie as director Richard Benson (Holden) tries to write a last minute screenplay while his secretary (Hepburn) types everything down offering suggestions along the way. The imagined movie stars Hepburn as Gabby or "the girl who stole the Eiffel tower". The plot of the fictitious film is kind of hard to follow however Hepburn does wear some interesting outfits. I've modernized my favorite look from the beginning of the screenplay, when Hepburn goes to a cafe for Bastille day. Hepburn's look here is classic with a bright twist. It's summery and fun yet very ladylike.

My friend Mira was partially right when she said to not even attempt second semester junior year. While these last few weeks of school are incredibly hectic, the knowledge that soon I will be sitting in the sun, reading my favorite mags, blogging, and listening to my favorite songs with some gnocchi and my guitar, Paloma is very exciting. Now that I've gotten my annual spring cold. I can finally stay home and relax from all that school slyly slips into my bag and writes in my planner. This also gives me time at long last time to devote to Nouvoletta. Oh how I missed her and all of you guys!

Last spring, I purchased an organic cotton dress from h&m. Oh man is it comfortable. Stylish too. Ever since, I have been hooked. The benefit of using organic materials is that they are naturally grown without pesticides. For example, organic cotton plantations do not spray pesticides on their plants. Now, while pesticides can kill bugs, they are ultimately harmful to the envoirnment as a whole because they can also harm worms who create soil and other animals. Pesticides can also seep through the soil down into groundwater supplies which can later be consumed by us. (mmm...beetle poison) Organic materials are probably the easiest way to go green with your wardrobe right now because it seems to be the fashion world's green method of choice. The year was 1999 when I figured out that if I gathered my shirt in front of my stomach, twisted it, then tucked it into the neckline, I could have a makeshift halfshirt behind my mother's back. How innovative! Well... sort of. Back then I longed with such intensity for what I and my friends called "bellyshirts". It was the ultimate symbol of sexiness, maturity, and being a teenager. I had to have one. Alas, I was seven, not 17 and I would only end up looking like the littlest prostitute which my mother would not have. Fast forward ten years and a lot has happened. The Prima Donna of "bellyshirts", Britney Spears has gone from the top of the stardom mountain to the bottom of the rehab sea and back. Midriff bearing has been banned in nearly every secondary school in the country. And I have grown up without ever looking back at the once coveted article of clothing that remained locked in my childhood dreams. At least until now. I suppose I saw it coming sophomore year when my friend Mira wore a vintage halfshirt to school over another top, after that the now sorely missed nostalgia came flooding back. By last week I was seeing them everywhere. I even read an excellent article about them in this month's Nylon. I think the time has come to give the seven year old inside me what she wants. Here's my summer half shirt shopping wishlist:

The cropped halter is a classic. I would wear it with a structured high waist skirt of even a low slung circle skirt. Interlock Halter Top- $8

Shop Your Own Closet: When I brought home my Oberlin t-shirt I had no idea what to do with it. Oberlin is my first choice school for their conservatory and I am dying to wear their shirt everywhere. Then it hit me: it would make the best halfshirt ever! To make one simply make a horizontal cut about an inch or two below the bust and viola!

I have actually wanted to be an opera singer since I was a small child and have been studying classical voice since the age of seven. At the start of last summer, I caught a glimpse of who was to be my friend Rudy moon walking across the end of the hallway I was walking down. As he turned the corner he noticed me and stopped immediately. When we ended up in the elevator together I inquired about the sudden dance outburst and when he squeezed out a shy confirmation of my sighting I screamed something along the lines of "You like to boogie?! Me too!!"We ended up in a furious tango in that same elevator and during the dip my poor wayfarers sailed off my head and into the corner. They were finished. I spent the rest of that summer and every sunny winter day squinting. Now that spring and summer are fast approaching I need to sheild my eyes. Stylishly, of course.

I have never been a shoe person. I invest in clothes and shoes come and go with everything. Currently I have spent the last three months going from leather boots to rainboots and back. Once I wore peep toe wedges but I mostly relied on my leather boots and the rain boots when the weather allowed. Back to Basics

I am in serious need of new basics. I don't know how I got into this situation but suddenly my wardrobe's foundation is crumbling. Some of my typical basics:

Leotards: I love to tuck shirts into my skirts. With regular knit tops this can sometimes pose several problems. You can a) stretch out the bottom of the shirt in an attempt to fit it into the skirt. b) have an awkward shirt line around your hips that is visible outside the skirt. or c) have major bunching of the shirt which obscures the line of your outfit and makes your waist look larger. My solution: leotards. Maybe it's the dance influence over the years but spandex is practically a cure-all. I love these:

I love this back! It's different and good if you want to be a little more sober. A complete point at the lower back is a more sensual alternative. Natalie 3/4 sleeve pinched front leotard - $26.95

Tights: Since I gave up on pants, I pair my leos with my favorite winter staple: tights. Though a friend of mine is still bewildered by this. I like tights because they make my legs look like they're made of fabric. Now while you might shudder or raise an eyebrow briefly, hear me out. I think it gives a more touchable quality to an outfit. When your legs are made of fabric they do not decieve. If your lover decides to put his or her head in your lap or lean against your leg they will be quite comfortable. Also it adds whimsy where humanity gets a bit dull.

I was devestated when Express stopped selling stirrup tights. Then I remembered that Urban existed. Stirrups are great for flats or heels by the way. Sparkle & Fade Ballet Leggings - $28

As you may have gathered, I am a high school junior. Recently, my biology teacher assigned a project on a topic of our choice (bio related of course.) So I chose dermatology. My goal is to find out what different ingredients in skin care products do to your skin and why your skin needs those functions to occur. For example, the Febuary issue of Vogue named Papaya "nature's D.I.Y. enzyme mask" My task would be to get to the bottom of that. What enzyme is in papaya? What effect does it have on skin? Why does our skin need to be affected in such a way?

The format of this product is...wait for it...A BLOG! It will be called La Biologie. I chose this name because I will try to ground essential topics with scientific fact. (I picked the feminine article because I am a feminist through and through.) After grading I want to turn it into a full blown beauty blog! I've always adored make up and want to try out new products and looks.

I should have the blog up and running in a week. In the mean time, tell me what you think. What would you like to read about? Any advice? Favorite products? I want to start getting draft posts ready!

Style Icon: Dame Margot Fonteyn as Ondine

In 1958, Sir Frederick Ashton choreographed the ballet Ondine, for the prima ballerina assoluta, Margot Fonteyn. The ballet tells the love story of a water sprite named Ondine and the mortal Palemon. Ondine is of course played by Margot Fonteyn. In fact, Ashton choreographed the ballet to showcase her talent. As Fonteyn portrays a sprite, her costume was a sheer, draped dress that allowed for lots of movement to complement her fluidity throughout the dance. She also kept her hair down which allowed for hairography, choreography or acknowledgement of hair movement in a dance. Since the dance for the most part takes place in the sea, the choreography really emphasised continuous movement of the water. Ultimately Fonteyn's look was about movement--fluid, poetic movement. I find this look timeless because it is the epitome of free, feminine beauty and classic soft romanticism. This look looks great in the season's jewel tones.

My wardrobe is getting a bit drab. And while I continue to discover amazing blasts from the past (inpecably shaped velvet blazer, too cute beret, shortened broomstick skirts), I still fall into a style rut. So, I have decided to start adding more accessories. Here's some of my favorites:

The Look

As the recession continues to vaporize our wallets, homes, and jobs, we find ourselves with nothing but conservation on our brains. While this new sense of frugality is indeed a valuable virtue, our hearts often break when we say goodbye to our favorite pre-recession indulgences. If any of you are like me, then you might be saddened to see your favorite boutiques and consignment shops close and the money for your latest dress suddenly gone. As soon as I witnessed the first effects, I have been pondering ways to keep my wardrobe looking lovely and my bank account looking full. While I could just buy cheaper clothing it wouldn't really amount to anything if it's poorly made and will not last until next season. So I have divulged a plan: the uniform. No, not a plaid skirt or a polo that says "McDonald's", but a collection of versatile favorites and statement pieces. These are not only affordable but pay for themselves as they carry you through the recession and beyond in style!

This is a perfect spring-fall staple that you can wear with nearly anything. Contrast it with a rumpled coat, pull it together with a blazer, toughen it up with tights and docs, or wear it as is. Ultimately, these pieces are suggestions. They are pieces that are generally very versatile but my advice is to take this time to stop buying every last trend and really find yourself. Figure out your look and only buy pieces that truly reflect that image. Don't simply pick out normal basics, go with pieces that you really love and will wear again and again and never get tired of. Those are worth anything.

You carry your Nalgene bottle everywhere. You recycle all your old assignments loose papers when you clean out your locker. You’ve consistently turned off every light in your house that no one was using. Maybe you even planted a tree? The work my darlings, is not yet done. Those of you who are a little more fashion forward have probably heard about the new crop of designers who are going green. The green movement is entering new territory: our closets. Whether you find yourself to be particularly chic or laid-back about style, this is green tactic that we should all take part in. The great thing is that anyone can, at any price range and with any personal style.

It seems that one of the most common ways to go green with your wardrobe is by buying clothing made from organic fabrics. This means that the materials used to make the fabric such as cotton, are grown without pesticides or special growth hormones that pollute our air and water. A lot of the clothing I have bought in the last year is organic. And contrary to certain stigmas, none of the clothing is an unsightly brown or has an odd rope-like texture. Another way designers have made their clothing eco friendly is by using recycled/reground fibers. This is, of course, recycled fabric or fabric made from other recycled and reprocessed materials. Since the fabrics are reprocessed to create new ones they are never wasted which lowers the amount of new cotton and rubber produced in environmentally harmful factories.

So the question that still remains is “who makes eco friendly clothing?” The answer: you can find many of today’s eco friendly clothing in every price range, style, and any other criteria you use to select your clothing. For organic clothing, I covet Phillip Lim’s Go Green Go collection which offers beautiful cocktail dresses in the softest organic cotton. Jesse Kamm, the textile gem who makes and designs all of the patterns used for her clothing, uses organic, eco-friendly dyes and makes many pieces out of organic material. And I couldn’t possibly forget wunderkind Rogan Gregory, three different organic lines: Rogan, Loomstate, and EDUN. If you want to go green for practice check out Alo for affordable and adorable sports bras and tack shorts. Adidas Grün has not only created sneakers made of recycled yarn, cotton, and rubber but also soft, cute tops and t-shirts made from organic cotton. Aaron Chang, the surfer-photographer turned swimwear designer, creates completely wearable, mix-matched print bikinis from recycled plastic bottles.

So now that you have an array of possibilities you have no excuse for not making your next addition to your wardrobe a green one. I’m not saying you have to say goodbye to your old non-eco friendly favorites. Just remember that you can still look amazing in any situation life throws at you and still save the environment at the same time, now doesn’t that sound admirable?

Roman Holiday Wardrobe

From 9th to 11th grade my school requires you to wear a uniform. However, senior year we are allowed to wear whatever we want within a dress code that does not allow jeans, sweatpants, or flip flops. Everything else is fair game. When seniors go away for senior projects in the spring, the junior class is allowed to begin to wear the senior dress code. Let me say I have been looking forward to this since last year and have been planning since this past summer. My senior wardrobe will consist of what I like to call "secretary Basics. This was sparked not only by a feature in a spring issue of Nylon titled "Coffee, Tea, or Me?" but also by a beautiful movie called Roman Holiday. The movie stars the ever stylish Audrey Hepburn as a runaway princess who despite her first pixie cut and street vendor gladiator sandals, cannot shake the regal poise behind her adorable gamine looks. Aside from rocking the gladiators, her main outfit during the movie consists of a cuffed button up shirt, neckerchief, wide belt, and full skirt. Providing the wide belt and button up, and gladiators, here are some of the full skirts I have been coveting all month long.

Elise Øverland is my favorite. I really adore her Spring Ready to Wear! Her clothes fit in that small medium of Earth and Sky where you can wear them and still feel like you're in a fantasy world. These Times They Are A Changin'

Oh Fendi, I do love your Spring/Summer Ready to Wear. After finishing my math midterm last week I immediately took out Febuary's Harper's Bazzaar and right in the "What's in, What's Out" section was a picture of Natasha Poly and Anna Selezneva in gorgeous eyelet dresses. However, this was no normal eyelet, my darlings. This was an wonderful exaggerated eyelet with large geometric cutouts. It definately summed up the message of this season's look: Dramatic Change. 2009's spring fashion is turning long standing rules on their heads. Models are swathed in stately jewel tones and caged in dewy pastels. The babydoll and trapeze summer staples of yesteryear are replaced by structured cinched waists. This year has structure all right, this year has a plan. Let's get to work lovelies!
